Where Students Find Their Voice

Every year, Guru Purnima reminds me of the beautiful bond between a guru and a student. For the past ten years, I have had the privilege of giving my students a stage where they can step forward, perform fearlessly and let their music speak for them.

Indian classical music — learning, practice and performance

Guru Purnima holds a very special place in my heart. For the past ten years, Shivranjini Classes has been conducting a special annual programme on Guru Purnima, creating a platform for our students to showcase their learning, talent and dedication.

This year too, the stage came alive with the performances of 30+ students. Seeing their parents, relatives and loved ones present to encourage them made the entire atmosphere even more cheerful and lively.

What makes these performances especially valuable for our students is the opportunity to perform alongside trained and experienced musicians. Performing with live musicians teaches a student something that regular classroom practice cannot always offer, the ability to listen, respond, maintain rhythm and carry oneself confidently on stage.

It is also a matter of great honour for us to have distinguished personalities from the world of classical music as guests and judges. Having the respected veteran of classical music, “Shri Raghvendra Baliga Ji”, with us added immense value and encouragement to the occasion.

As a teacher, one of the most fulfilling moments for me is watching my students walk onto the stage with a fearless and bold approach. Some may begin with nervousness, but when they find their sur and settle into the music, I can see their confidence grow with every note.

Shivranjini music students and teachers

The blessings of our guests and their kind words of appreciation and encouragement mean a great deal to our students. Such words become a source of confidence and inspire them to continue learning, practising and challenging themselves.

For me, Guru Purnima is not only about celebrating the guru. It is equally about witnessing the growth of the student.

Every performance is a small milestone in their musical journey, and every time a student stands confidently on stage, I feel that the true joy of teaching lies in helping them discover the voice they already carry within themselves.

May every student continue to learn with humility, perform with courage and grow with music in their heart. That, for me, is the most beautiful Guru Purnima blessing.
